I know, I know. I keep hopping from platform to platform. But tools change rapidly these days we like trying out the new ones. I'm now "blogging" (sharing is probably a better word) on Google+.

I won't bother trying to describe what Google+ is, you can check that out with -- of course -- a Google search.  I look forward to adding you to my circles.

Sun, 14 Aug 2011 10:06:00 -0700 Peggy Noonan: The problem is love http://www.growlearfield.com/peggy-noonan-the-problem-is-love http://www.growlearfield.com/peggy-noonan-the-problem-is-love

The reason for The London Riots has been suggested by Ms. Noonan, I think one of the finest observers of our global community. She wrote this opinion piece yesterday in the weekend Wall Street Journal. [You might hit the WSJ paywall]

The riots in Britain left some Americans shaken. In the affluence of the past 40 years, and with the rise of the jumbo jet, we became a nation of travelers. We have been to England, visited a lot of those neighborhoods. They were peaceful; now they're in flames. But something else raised our unease as we followed the story on TV and on the Net. I think there was a ping on the national radar. We saw something over there that in smaller ways we're starting to see over here.

Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is one of the brightest men I have the pleasure of knowing. He is spot-on in his understanding of America's financial standing and how to improve it. Read this op-ed piece in the August 2nd Washington Post.

Mon, 01 Aug 2011 08:41:00 -0700 It isn't broken http://www.growlearfield.com/it-isnt-broken http://www.growlearfield.com/it-isnt-broken

In fact, the recent “Washington turbulence” is proof our government isn’t broken. It is working exactly as our constitution-framers intended. I’m proud to be an American.

Anyone who watched NBC’s “Taking the Hill” last night would get the impression that our system of government was broken. I’ll need to re-watch it to count the number of times Brian Williams said just that. But I can’t stomach a second viewing. It was miserable enough the first time through. Just trust me that he had to say, “our government is broken” a dozen times anyway.

His reporting was terrible and cliché-filled as he walked the halls of the Capitol: “‘we flooded-the–zone;’ ‘we chronicled all the moving parts’…’warts and all.” Worse, viewers were left with the impression something horrible was wrong with our Constitution and the way government was working today as opposed to historically.

Not so, Brian. You may be frustrated. But I think most Americans believe our elected officials are working things out and are doing their damndest. Read your American history, Brian, and you’ll learn comparisons that will shock you. You’ve lost me as a viewer because of your increasingly shallow, audience-chasing reporting. I think its NBC News that is broken, not our constitution.

Sad news this morning that friend, Kevin Gray, died early today. He was an AE for us right out of college for several years, then moved to his home town of Kansas City to take over the Kansas City Sports Commission. More later.

Thu, 02 Jun 2011 14:59:00 -0700 Learfield's Crack Journalists http://www.growlearfield.com/learfields-crack-journalists http://www.growlearfield.com/learfields-crack-journalists

Scott Brandon, who oversees Learfield's News Ops, sent me a note about his team. I think it warrants not only a "Hear hear"...but a reprint of his comments. Here is his note to me:

"Our newsrooms in Iowa, Missouri, South Carolina, Wisconsin and Nebraska have worked extremely hard this past year. They’ve been through rough legislative sessions that have included public protests, filibusters, the bright lights of national media attention, and very, very long days that often stretched far into the night. They’ve dealt with difficult stories like executions, high profile trials and, as we’ve witnessed lately, the aftermath of natural disasters.
And, just when you thought they might get a break…a little time to relax…campaign season is here.

We have some amazingly talented, dedicated people in our newsrooms. They provide a vital service to the public and are a very important part of the Learfield family. When you see them, give them a big ol’ pat on the back…or buy them a cold beer (or two). They deserve it."

Thanks, Scott! Well said. Hear hear!!

Wed, 01 Jun 2011 14:24:00 -0700 Summer Reading http://www.growlearfield.com/summer-reading http://www.growlearfield.com/summer-reading

It's June 1st. Welcome to summer, 2011. Vacation time. Summer reading. Each year people submit their favorite titles and I put them here for all to see. Mine? Well, I've just finished two outstanding works, both by The Arbinger Institute. The first is "Leadership and Self Deception" and the second, its sequel: "The Anatomy of Peace." They're fast reads and the first will tempt you for the second. Your choices?

Thanks, Clyde
